Conference Presentations: NCLC 2017

At the 2017 National Chinese Language Conference in Houson, TX, experts presented on the following:

Deepening Conversations and Practices of Chinese Language and Immersion Programs: Program Effectiveness and Teaching and Assessing Language, Content, and Culture
Organizers and Co-chairs: Shuhan Wang and Joy Kreeft Peyton, CELIN at Asia Society

In light of the fact that more and more Chinese language and immersion programs are established and striving to improve, this workshop engaged experts and participants in sharing strategies and resources for building program effectiveness in multiple dimensions. The presentations and roundtable discussions were built on a new CELIN document, "Key Features of Effective Chinese Language Programs: A Checklist" (Wang & Peyton, 2017), which includes the following features:

  • Feature 1: Program Design, Funding, Governance/Leadership, and Accountability
  • Feature 2: Curriculum
  • Feature 3: Instruction
  • Feature 4: Assessment
  • Feature 5: Staff Quality and Professional Development
  • Feature 6: Materials, Resources, and Technology Tools
  • Feature 7: Program Articulation
  • Feature 8: Family Support and Community Engagement
  • Feature 9: External Networking and Partnerships
