"Abacus: Small Enough to Jail" Film Screening
VIEW EVENT DETAILSPresented by Rice University's Chao Center for Asian Studies
Please note that this program takes place off-site at Rice University's BRC Auditorium, 6500 South Main Street, Room 103, Houston, Texas 77030.
Following the financial crisis of 2008, only a single bank in America was indicted for alleged wrongdoing: Abacus Federal Savings, a small community bank serving Manhattan's Chinatown. The Academy Award-nominated documentary Abacus: Small Enough to Jail, directed by Steve James, chronicles Abacus' prosecution — a conspicuous one, given the lack of indictments for much larger banks that admitted to worse crimes. The film examines the effect of the trial on founder Thomas Sung; his daughter, President and CEO Jill Sung; and the rest of their family, as well as on New York's Chinese community as a whole.
Rice University's Chao Center for Asian Studies presents a free screening of Abacus along with a reception and Q&A with the Sung family, on Monday, September 17, as part of the Frank and Cindy Liu Distinguished Visitor Series. Speakers will include:
- Thomas Sung, Founder, Abacus Federal Savings Bank
- Jill Sung, President, Abacus Federal Savings Bank
- Vera Sung, Director of the Board, Abacus Federal Savings Bank
- Chanterelle Sung, Former Assistant District Attorney under Cyrus Vance
- Hwei Lin Sung
- Mark Mitten, Producer, Abacus: Small Enough to Jail
- Eddie Allen, CFA (Q&A moderator); Senior Partner of Eagle Global Advisors, LLC, and Chairman of the Board of Asia Society Texas Center
Join us at the BioScience Research Collaborative (BRC) Auditorium, conveniently located just outside of Rice campus, for this very special event. Paid parking is available underneath the BRC, accessible from Dryden Road. A reception and Q&A will follow the film screening.
