India, Pakistan, and Democracy: Solving the Puzzle of Divergent Paths
VIEW EVENT DETAILSThe question of why some countries have democratic regimes and others do not is a significant issue in comparative politics. India, Pakistan, and Democracy looks at the two South Asian neighbors with clearly contrasting political histories and presents an argument on why India is a democracy and Pakistan is not. What factors have led India and Pakistan's post-independence history to be so different? How valid are explanations that focus on nationalism and immediate post-independence politics, external relations, religious difference, and social economic power structures?
Please join Philip Oldenburg, author of India, Pakistan, and Democracy: Solving the Puzzle of Divergent Paths and Research Scholar, South Asian Institute, Columbia University; Hassan Abbas, Quaid-i-Azam Professor, Columbia University and Bernard Schwartz Fellow, Asia Society; and Kanchan Chandra, Associate Professor, Wilf Family Department of Politics, New York University, to discuss these and other pertinent issues.
