Musical Performance
Kyaw Kyaw Naing
Internationally renowned master of the Pat Waing, a traditional Burmese drum-circle
Myanmar's legendary composer and percussionist Kyaw Kyaw Naing, is a renowned master of the pat waing — a traditional instrument made of 21 separately tuned drums that surround the player and are played melodically at lightning-fast speeds. Naing's musicality has made him famous throughout southeast Asia, where he has been a highly-sought-after composer of music for film and live performer. He learned the tradition from his late father, Chein Tit Tee, one of the most famous masters of an earlier generation, who toured the United States in 1975 as part of an Asia Society national tour. Now residing in the U.S., Naing is spreading the word about the music of Myanmar (Burma) throughout this country. After a performance at the Asia Society, the New York Times called his music "an exhilarating tease, defying expectations of symmetry or steady tempo.... the astonishingly playful, communicative.... the Burmese penchant for jazzy polyrhythm kicks in with complex percussion."
