Cyber Abuse: A Web of Violence
VIEW EVENT DETAILSWith widespread access to technology and the internet, we find an increasing number of people uploading their lives online. In February of this year, a report published by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Kantar IMRB, stated that the number of internet users in India is expected to reach 500 million by June 2018. This, coupled with the omniscient nature of the internet means that all aspects of our day to day lives, including personal data are easily uploadable and accessible online—thereby increasing vulnerability to potential cyber-bullies, trolls, and even human traffickers. From insults and rumors, to even more vindictive gossip and outright abuse and violence, the increase in availability of cheap mobile data services, means that those who inflict cyber abuse now have faster and more disguised ways of accessing the vulnerable and exploiting them. In consideration of rising trends in online abuse such as cyber defamation, stalking, revenge porn, sextortion, and related issues, the panel will discuss actions and policy changes to combat cyber abuse. How has technology affected the ease with which cyber abuse takes place? In what ways has it given rise to new modes of gender based violence? Join us as we tackle these issues and more with Monique Villa, CEO of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, Priti Patkar, Co-founder and Director of Prerana, and Shweta Katti, Activist from Kamathipura in a discussion moderated by Adrian Phillips, Director of Legal at Justice and Care.
