The Asian Century
VIEW EVENT DETAILSFuture of Asia Series: Part I
“..across Asia, rising incomes, technological penetration and generational change are enabling greater social and economic freedom – but politics remains fairly controlled, because regimes like it that way and, to a large degree, people do as well”, writes Parag Khanna in his new book The Future is Asian. He argues that Asia may have arrived late on the stage, but the various societies, economies, polities at different stages in their respective growth trajectories would maintain a continuous focus on this region in the 21st century.
India with a growth rate of over 7% is second only to China among the fastest growing economies in the world, while China has the second largest GDP in the world. Japan and South Korea are forces to reckon with in technology and Japan is certainly winning brownie points for their diplomacy as it is leading the efforts in global partnerships and multilateral trade. With global trade being dominated by global value chains, the developing Asian economies that are manufacturing hubs, stand to gain from the US-China trade tensions. However, development of infrastructure and strengthening resource capabilities will be vital for the developing Asian economies to grow. As for the economies that are now developed, democracy and civil liberties have often given way to technocracy and efficiency. So, is a centralized form of governance more efficacious for Asia’s growth?
After Europe dominating the 19th century and the United States dominance since then, is it time for the ‘megaregion’ of Asia to take center stage and shape the course of the global future? How will the economic ambitions be tamed by the need for legitimate popular mandates and democracy?
