Event Recap: Asia's Pathways to Climate Resilience
On February 13, 2024, Asia Society Seattle and Northern California hosted a virtual discussion on Asia’s Pathways to Climate Resilience. Shuo Li, Director of China Climate Hub at the Asia Society Policy Institute; Jackson Ewing, Director of Energy and Climate Policy at the Nicholas Institute of Energy at Duke University; and Kithmina Hewage, Senior Advisor at the Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society, spoke at the event.
Throughout the discussion, the speakers underscored the imperative of understanding Asia’s unique position in achieving global climate resilience. Emphasizing the need for tailored approaches to address climate challenges in different countries, they also stressed the importance of intra-Asian collaboration to formulate regional solutions, transcending national boundaries. Drawing attention to recent developments at COP 28, the speakers highlighted the progress in financing to help countries vulnerable to climate change. The speakers expressed optimism regarding U.S.-China climate dialogues, citing positive outcomes at subnational levels, while also acknowledging the complexities posed by escalating geopolitical tensions.
During the Q&A session, attendees explored avenues for enhancing policy formation and implementation to address impending climatic crises. There was a call for Asia to redefine its climate efforts on its own terms, reflecting its unique challenges and opportunities.
