Toyota Chairman to Appear Before U.S. Lawmakers
“Later this week Toyota’s Chairman, Akio Toyoda, will testify at a Congressional hearing on the automaker’s major recalls in the United States. While most of the criticism of Toyota rightly focuses on the actual problems with its cars, Toyoda and Toyota have been further dogged by concerns that they reacted slowly to the problems. Among other things, this delayed response has helped to fuel the rumor mill about what was really going on. Will Toyota be able ride out the storm, rebuild its reputation, and bring lost customers back into the fold? With loads of cash on hand to offer incentives and the history of other companies (Bridgestone, Ford, JetBlue, Johnson & Johnson …) who have come back from the brink of similar catastrophes on their side, the odds seem in their favor,” says Michael Kulma, Asia Society’s Director of Policy Initiatives.
