Asia Society Japan Center is delighted to invite, Mark Bookman, who is Ph.D. Candidate in East Asian Languages and Civilizations at University of Pennsylvania where he is studying the history and politics of disability. From 2018, he is spending his time at University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology as a Japan Foundation Doctoral Research Fellow.
Mark’s discussion is titled, “Inclusion as Innovation: The Past, Present and Future of Disability Policy in Japan”. Currently he is finishing his dissertation, “Politics and Prosthetics: 150 Years of Disability in Japan,” examining the historical contingencies and geopolitical circumstances that have allowed some disabled people to dictate how policymakers and members of the general public understand ideas about impairment and chronic illness in contemporary Japan. Outside of academia, he is an Accessibility Consultant where he has been advising policy makers as well as for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
