Avenues: The World School
Avenues serves students from 2 years old through Grade 12. The Early Learning Center serves children from 2 to 5 years old, when they enter kindergarten.
Program Description
Avenues New York is a private, independent, co-educational school located in the heart of West Chelsea in Manhattan, New York City. Avenues was founded with the vision to establish one school with many campuses that are intentionally connected and located in key global cities. Avenues is one highly integrated learning community, supported by a common mission, shared curriculum—including language immersion—world-class technology, and a headquarters team in New York City. Avenues is helping to define a new category of school—a world school.
Avenues opened its doors in 2012 to 740 students and has since then grown its student body to over 1,750 students. Avenues’ global campuses include Shenzhen, China, São Paulo, Brazil, and Silicon Valley, California in 2021.
The Early Learning Center (ELC) at Avenues: The World School starts at age 2 and supports almost 400 students, up to age 5, when they enter kindergarten. Students follow a 50/50 Chinese/English immersion model in the ELC through our lower division.
Program Features
The ELC is composed of our nursery (age 2), pre-kindergarten (ages 3–4), and kindergarten (age 5). The educational philosophy of the ELC is to provide a nurturing environment that allows each child to grow socially, emotionally, and cognitively. The environment is rich in opportunities for children to explore the world around them in and outside of the classroom, and the curriculum is play-based and developmentally appropriate. Young children learn best by doing, and play is the medium through which they explore the world and learn about themselves and others. They will continue in a language immersion program through the Lower Division (grades 1–5), with the goal of reaching fluency in both Chinese and English.
The ELC program facilitates social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth and values a strong sense of community within the classroom and larger school. Each class has two teachers, a head teacher with a Master’s degree and an experienced associate teacher. There are specialists for movement, science, music, and library. Faculty are encouraged to build strong, nurturing relationships with the children in their care, and the partnership of the school and the home is extremely important.
