Talking Dreams is an Asia Society Triennial series of Instagram Live talks featuring Triennial artists in conversation with Boon Hui Tan, artistic director of the Triennial and director of Asia Society Museum. Join us live on Instagram with acclaimed Syrian Armenian artist Kevork Mourad for a tour of his studio and discover his complex, multi-layered works. Mourad will also discuss his upcoming work for the Asia Society Triennial.

Known for paintings made spontaneously in collaboration with composers, dancers, and musicians, Mourad performs in his art both a vital act of remembering and a defiant demonstration of creativity in the face of tragedy. His work mediates the experience of trauma through finely wrought, abstracted imagery that celebrates his rich cultural heritage while mourning its loss.

Born in Qamishli, Syria, Mourad now lives and works in New York City. He received his Master of Fine Arts from the Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts in Armenia. Mourad has been a resident teaching artist at Brandeis University, Harvard University, and Holy Cross (Worcester). With his technique of spontaneous painting, where he shares the stage with musicians—a collaboration in which art and music develop in counterpoint to each other—he has worked with many world-renowned musicians, he is the only visual artist member in Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble and is featured in the film Music of Strangers (2016).

To watch, follow @asiasociety on Instagram and tune in at 11 a.m. New York time on September 3rd.

Presented in partnership with Aga Khan Museum.
