Video: Reengaging the Asia–Pacific on Trade: A TPP Roadmap for the Next Administration

ASIA SOCIETY POLICY INSTITUTE,  September 30, 2020 — In the aftermath of a presidential election, it's not unusual for an incoming administration to revisit policy choices made by the previous administration or, in the case of reelection, within their first term. One decision that strongly merits another look after November is the U.S. withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a regional trade agreement the United States signed with 11 Asia–Pacific countries in 2016. The case for U.S. participation in the TPP has only become more compelling as the political and economic importance of the Asia–Pacific region grows and concerns about Beijing's economic model mount. More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic has also strengthened the rationale for U.S. reentry as Asia is expected to rebound from the crisis before the rest of the world, and interest in developing trusted supply chains grows. A new ASPI report, Reengaging the Asia–Pacific on Trade: A TPP Roadmap for the Next U.S. Administration, examines the options the next administration would have for reengaging the CPTPP countries on trade, and assesses their feasibility based on domestic considerations and developments, as well as input from the CPTPP countries themselves.

Video: How K-Pop is Changing the Entertainment Industry in Post-Corona Times

ASIA SOCIETY SWITZERLAND, September 16, 2020 — Cultural workers in all the world are struggling with the restrictions on public events, concerts, and festivals in order to prevent the spreading of COVID-19. Therefore, audiences and musicians are trying to find new ways to connect online. K-pop groups — who already built a strong social media following — are the first to move to fully livestreamed concerts, performing in a virtual setting and allowing real-time interaction with the audience. The Beyond Live online concert this April witnessed 75,000 paid live viewers from 109 countries. Are K-pop fans particularly willing to pay for interactive formats in order to connect with both idols and other fans? What impact will these technical developments have on the entertainment industry worldwide? This virtual dialogue on K-culture, cohosted by the Korea Foundation and Asia Society Switzerland, brings together leading experts in the Korean entertainment industry to discuss how K-pop is changing the entertainment industry in post-corona times.
