Asia Society Hong Kong Center is proud to present a screening of 2020 Chaos and Hope, a documentary about America’s experience confronting the perfect storm that was the year 2020. While all societies around the world faced unprecedented challenges brought on by the Covid pandemic, the stresses of the pandemic exacerbated America’s existing political, economic, and racial tensions, leading to a truly extraordinary year. 2020 Chaos and Hope takes viewers on a chronological journey through 2020 in the United States, sharing the stories of healthcare workers, Covid patients and their families, historians, politicians, and activists along the way.
Following the screening, we will host a fireside chat between the film’s producer Ceci Chan and Professor Vivian Lin, Executive Associate Dean LKS Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong.
About 2020 Chaos and Hope:
A time capsule of a year unlike any other, 2020 Chaos and Hope brings us face-to-face with the dramatic and emotional moments of the year 2020 – COVID-19, racial strife, political unrest, truth under fire, and increased economic disparity all gathered into the perfect storm.
The film brings together a diverse group of individuals and renowned experts including frontline workers, everyday citizens, educators, activists, historians, scientists, and politicians, as they reflect on the year 2020 and contemplate the future.
Ceci Chan has over 38 years of experience in strategic business development and making investments. Her first USD $100 million investment was done when she was 23. She invests in content creation/distribution, blockchain technology, and sustainable energy consumption.
She is a Founding Partner of Dalpha-Tech, a joint venture created by Dasym, an independent, research-driven investment company with a strong presence in telecoms, media, and technology (TMT). With Dasym and partners, she established a fund management company, which has obtained two asset management licenses from China’s AMAC to receive and make investments in RMB, USD and Euro.
She founded ACE91 to create film and TV programs that inspire global audiences to increase positive changes. In October 2022, ACE91 completed production of “2020: Chaos and Hope,” a feature documentary (shown on the USA distribution platform Peacock) that examines how the COVID-19 pandemic amplified systemic inequalities in the US. A film with 9-time Grammy-winning Jazz icon, Wynton Marsalis, is in development. ACE91 and Dasym lead the creation of a film based on Oxford Prof. Peter Frankopan’s critically acclaimed international best-seller, “The Silk Roads.”
As a committed supporter of Harvard, CC is a Vice Chair of the Kennedy School of Government’s Dean’s Council. She established support for the Shorenstein Center’s Documentary Film Research Initiative, which engages with scholars, filmmakers, journalists, and industry leaders on the new age of filmmaking. Additionally, she is an Executive Committee member of the USC Shoah Foundation, which was founded by Steven Spielberg 30 years ago. She supports NYU’s African Grove Theater, which reopened in 2023, 200 years after it had been shut down. She supports prison reform efforts as a part of her drive to increase civil and voting rights. CC has worked resolutely to reduce racism, hatred, and violence since 1985.
Professor Vivian Lin joined the LKS Faculty of Medicine as Executive Associate Dean in March 2019. She is concurrently Professor of Public Health Practice.
