About the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis
Established in 1956 and headquartered in New York with a mission to build bridges between the countries, economies, and cultures of Asia and the West, the Asia Society now operates 15 centers across the United States, Asia, and Europe. In 2015, the Asia Society appointed The Hon. Kevin Rudd, former career diplomat, Foreign Minister, and Prime Minister of Australia, as the founding head of its Policy Institute. As the Asia Society’s “think-and-do tank,” the Policy Institute has focused on the political, economic, foreign policy, and climate change-related challenges and opportunities facing the countries of Asia, and their engagement with the United States and other regions of the world. In the years since its establishment, the Policy Institute has swiftly come to be ranked among the top one percent of think tanks worldwide, and among the top thirty — out of nearly two thousand — foreign policy think tanks in the United States.
Following his concurrent appointment as President and CEO of the Asia Society as a whole in late 2020, Mr. Rudd, himself a leading international authority on China, with the support of the Asia Society Board established a new Center for China Analysis within the Policy Institute. Given the Policy Institute’s global presence and diverse expertise, the Center is uniquely positioned to provide in-depth research and analysis on key China-related developments of central importance to the future.
Employing an array of full-time staff and research fellows, the Center’s work covers five major pillars of analysis on China:
- Domestic Politics;
- Economy and Technology;
- Foreign Policy and National Security;
- Climate, Energy, and Environment; and
- Contemporary Chinese Society, Culture, Public Health, and Education.
Presenting consistently independent and objective analysis with policy impact, the Center for China Analysis prioritizes Chinese language source material, emphasizes third-country analyses of China’s international engagement, and actively engages with counterpart institutions around the world as it aims to become one of the world’s leading centers for the study of China and its global role.
