2017 has been a testing year for the U.S.- South Korea relationship: at the same time that Kim Jong-un has engaged in more frequent and serious provocations, the U.S. and the ROK are adjusting to new presidential administrations and trying to find a common strategy for dealing with a nuclear North Korea. A strong U.S.-South Korea alliance is of critical importance for both: the U.S. depends on South Korea as a reliable partner in a troubled region, and both countries have a shared interest in developing strategies that address both the challenges and opportunities brought about by China’s rise.
This event, co-sponsored with the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in San Francisco, will focus on how each country responds to North Korea and the future trajectory of both the alliance and policy responses, with particular attention given to President Trump’s visit to Korea in early November.
