Optional school visits to Chinese language and culture programs in the greater Houston area give participants the opportunity to visit elementary and secondary schools, with a choice of different student age groups and proficiency levels (as space allows). These programs have a track record of high-quality instruction and student achievement.

School visits require advance registration and a separate fee of $125 for each route. Departure and return times vary by route, but in general, groups will depart the hotel between 7-8 AM and return to the hotel between 2:30-3:30 PM. Please note that preconference workshops and school visits run concurrently on Thursday, April 6, 2017.

Route 1: Kolter Elementary School & Bellaire High School ($125)

Kolter Elementary School has a long-standing reputation as a high-performance school with a focus on rigorous academics and an exploration of one of three language: Chinese, Spanish, or French. It’s a Foreign Language Magnet program dedicated to the academic success and personal growth of children in grades PreK-5.

Bellaire High School offers a World Languages Magnet Program that serves students who live outside of the school’s attendance zone. Languages offered includes Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, French, Spanish, Russian, Hindi, Hebrew, Italian, and Latin.

Route 2: Mandarin Immersion Magnet School & School at St George Place ($125)

Mandarin Immersion Magnet School (K-8) opened in August 2012, initially serving grades PK-2. It is expanding its Mandarin Immersion program to grade 6 this school year (2016-17). All students are served in a 50/50 immersion program with the goal of advanced proficiency by the time they leave the campus.

School at St George Place (ES) is an International Baccalaureate World School. It not only houses a Vanguard Neighborhood program for gifted and talented students, but also provides a variety of daily enrichment courses in Mandarin, visual arts, music, science lab, and research and development in their new media center.

Route 3: Lanier Middle School & Sharpstown International School ($125) 

Lanier Middle School is a Vanguard magnet and International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IBMYK school. In order to encourage students to become self-directed lifelong learners, the school provides a relevant and rigorous academic curriculum including world language programs such as Chinese, Spanish, and German.

Sharpstown International School serves grades 6 through 12 and provides all students the opportunity of a personalized learning environment and prepare all students for active roles as global citizens and develop students’ international knowledge and skills by deepen students’ understanding of the world culture. Students are representative of over 130 countries of the world, over 90 different languages. Majority of students speak Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Urdu, Farsi. This school has a strong Chinese program for both native speakers and second language learners.

Route 4: Houston Academy of International Studies & Furr High School ($125) 

Houston Academy of International Studies (HS) was a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School. It prepares students for active roles as global citizens through international studies with a college preparatory curriculum that emphasizes world languages and cultural learning such as Chinese and Spanish.

Furr High School offers career pathways in energy and mass communications through linked learning, an educational approach that combines rigorous academics with hands-on, real-world experiences. It is also a Confucius Institute classroom and strongly promotes the Chinese language and cultural studies at its campus.

Route 5: Seven Lakes High School & ILTexas Katy ($125) 

Seven Lakes High School (SLHS) opened its doors in 2005. In its first 10 years, SLHS has developed traditions that reflect excellence in academics, athletics, and fine arts. The school offers all levels I-IV and AP in Chinese, French, German and Spanish Language and Literature, as well as three levels of American Sign Language. The teachers in the LOTE Department at SLHS are committed to help students connect with worldwide cultures through the study of a language.

ILTexas Katy (K-8, International Leadership of Texas Charter School District) opened its doors in 2016. All 1,000+ students at ILTexas Katy are students of Mandarin Chinese, as part of a unique trilingual curriculum, which also includes daily instruction in Spanish. Chinese is offered to K-5 students through the FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary Schools) model and to middle school students as part of their daily academic schedule. Many of the seven Chinese teachers at this campus are guest teachers from China.

Route 6: ILTexas Westpark & Awty International School ($125) 

ILTexas Westpark (K-8, International Leadership of Texas Charter School District) opened its doors in 2016. All 1,000+ students at ILTexas Westpark are students of Mandarin Chinese, as part of a unique trilingual curriculum, which also includes daily instruction in Spanish. Chinese is offered to K-5 students through the FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary Schools) model and to middle school students as part of their daily academic schedule. Many of the seven Chinese teachers at this campus are guest teachers from China.

Awty International School is Houston's premier international school, the leader in International Education. We are a diverse community of students and teachers, hailing from some 50 nations and from our local Houston environs. Our school spans Prekindergarten through the 12th grade. In the culminating grades, our students pursue either the French Baccalauréat or the International Baccalaureate. Awty prepares students for the international world they will inherit, but we don’t wait for that future. We believe it is here now.
