Invest in Our Work – Make Community Voices Heard

Reach Out with ASHK

Earlier this year, ASHK co-hosted with Asia Society Philippines Foundation, Inc on the premier screening of the documentary, Sunday Beauty Queen that tells the touching real-life tales of five Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong and their dreams of becoming beauty queens on Sundays.

The film, as Mary Liza Diño, chairman of the Film Development Council of the Philippines, described, is "a love letter to the many domestic workers and helpers overseas, who choose to channel feelings of displacement or homesickness into something positive and uplifting.”

Michael Wong, Hong Kong-based producer for Sunday Beauty Queen, described his experience working that the film was not there to look for beauty, but to look for a cause and a dream.

Watch the post-screening Q&A to learn more about the filming process and positive impact it has on Filipino domestic workers living in Hong Kong.

This film has touched the hearts of those who came to its Hong Kong premiere screening at ASHK earlier this year. We want to reach out beyond our community for this impactful film by adding Chinese subtitles so that a wider audience can enjoy the film and spread the fantastic message that Sunday Beauty Queen stands for.

To make this happen, we aim to raise US$2,000 by July 31, 2017, for the Chinese subtitles. Any additional donations will be used to organize free community screenings at ASHK.

Thank you for your generous support for our continuing mission of promoting Asian cultures on a global scale!
