Starting from zero funds and a dream to create a system that connects marginalized women across the globe, Bonnie Chiu launched Lensational’s Facebook page on International Women’s Day in 2013 based on her passion for photography and her urge to empower woman around her. Despite being a small start-up, Lensational has secured corporate partnerships with global companies and contributes images to the world-class photography collections of Getty Images and Wellcome Image.
Volunteers from 25 countries and over 700 women from 20 countries, including domestic helpers in Hong Kong, are now empowering through the Lensational program by providing them cameras, training, and a platform to sell their work. Lensational is a successful social enterprise starting with limited resource and a big dream.
In this program, Bonnie Chiu will give a presentation on Lensational’s mission and work. She will also share her experience on starting the organization, searching for sponsors and partners, recruiting teams and volunteers, etc. She will also give advice on starting a social enterprise base on her current work on consulting other international social organizations. The short film Daughters of Bangladesh Garment Factory Workers, a documentary written, directed, and shot by five girls in Bangladesh, will be shown for a Hong Kong audience.
Hong Kong-born Bonnie Chiu is the founder and CEO of award-winning non-profit social enterprise Lensational, which aims to empower marginalized women by equipping them with cameras and photography training. She is also the Managing Director of The Social Investment Consultancy, an international consulting firm that helps organizations maximise their social impact. Her current and previous clients include international organizations like Save The Children and the World Association for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. She holds an MSc degree International Relations at the London School of Economics (LSE). She has just been awarded Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneur in Europe in 2017, and she is a regular speaker on women’s empowerment, social entrepreneurship, and youth engagement.
