Session 1: The State of the World
With Kyung-wha Kang and Adam Tooze
At the start of the day, Asia Society President & CEO Kyung-wha Kang and Adam Tooze, who will deliver the State of Asia Address on November 6, will engage in a wide-ranging conversation on the state of the world, and how the result of the U.S. elections – which, fingers crossed, will be clear at this point – is impacting Asia and the world.
Session 2: Eastwards: Economic Trajectories in India, China, and Japan
With Alicia García Herrero, Yumiko Murakami, and Garima Mohan
Recently, the trajectory of China's economy has been compared to that of Japan's – a gradual slowdown owed primarily to demographic decline. Meanwhile, the Indian economy and its potential are often compared to how the Chinese economy has developed. And after a long period of stagnation, Japan's economy is showing renewed signs of life – but will it last? This session explores the state of each economy in turn and makes sense of similarities and differences.
Session 3: The State of China
With Adam Tooze, Qing Wang, Zichen Wang, and Finbarr Bermingham (chair)
How China is doing is a complicated question right now. Increased political rigidity is contrasted by greater social heterodoxy; a slumping economy contrasted by technological prowess. Over all this looms the U.S.-China conflict. This session discusses China's current state and future trajectory in the context of its relationship with a new U.S. administration.
Executive Briefing 1: Prosperity and Demographics in East Asia
With Kyung-wha Kang and Yumiko Murakami
This informal roundtable conversation is off the record and accessible only to Executive Leader ticket holders.
Executive Briefing 2: How Technology Influences Geopolitics (And Vice Versa)
With Adam Tooze and and James Crabtree
This informal roundtable conversation is off the record and accessible only to Executive Leader ticket holders.
Session 4: India and Indonesia: Can They Pull It Off?
With Garima Mohan, Dewi Fortuna Anwar, and James Crabtree
For the last decades, the world's center of gravity has steadily moved eastwards. Now, India and Indonesia are promised to pull it southwards, with a supply of natural resources, a growing workforce, democratic systems, and a growing global heft. Will they be able to thrive in a multipolar world?
Session 5: Down to Business – Ageing, Resources, the AI Race
With Adam Tooze (chair), Yumiko Murakami, Dewi Fortuna Anwar, and Alicia García Herrero
There is no shortage of global challenges these days—and how they play out locally varies considerably. Adam Tooze discusses three of them in a series of brief one-on-one conversations with Yumiko Murakami, Dewi Fortuna Anwar, and Alicia García Herrero, each starting with a single graph.
Session 6: Europe's Asian Future
With Kyung-wha Kang and James Crabtree
What began as a shift in economic power is now extending into the geopolitical, military, and technological realms. Asian countries are not only expanding into European markets, but they also play a crucial role in conflicts on the ground. Europe's Asian future is here. Are we ready? And what does ideal engagement look like?

What is STATE OF ASIA?
STATE OF ASIA is the flagship yearly conference of Asia Society Switzerland. The third iteration will take place on November 7, 2024, at the Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue in Rüschlikon.
STATE OF ASIA provides a condensed overview of the current and future developments in Asia, and how they affect the world. It is geared towards decision-makers from business, government, NGOs, academia and civil society.
STATE OF ASIA is only accessible by invitation. Think you should receive an invitation? Let us know why through this form.
On the eve of the conference, November 6, we will host the State of Asia Address in collaboration with the University of Zurich. This event is open to the public and sets the stage for our conference the next day. More information.
Why should I attend STATE OF ASIA?
It has never been more important to understand current and future developments in Asia. From the race for economic supremacy to security politics, from climate change to the role of technology, Asia is shaping the big issues of our time.
Asia is a big, complex, and dynamic region, and it can be hard to keep an overview and make sense of all the developments. STATE OF ASIA brings together experts and decision-makers from across the globe to help you understand the key trends in geopolitics, geoeconomics, and geostrategy in a concise and innovative format.
Who should not attend STATE OF ASIA?
If you have never left your hometown, exclusively consume products made in your country of residence, and have no interest in global affairs whatsoever: feel free to skip this one.
If you have spent the past 60+ years traveling Asia extensively, have studied it academically, have garnered experience in business there, and have high-level trusted contacts in several countries, you may not need to attend either. (Please get in touch though, we’d love to get to know you!)
But if you, like most of us, feel that developments in Asia are of growing importance to you professionally or personally (or both); if you think that just following the news isn’t quite enough to get the full picture and connect the dots; and if you enjoy being in the presence of other smart people, then you should consider joining us. We’d love to have you.
What kind of tickets are available for STATE OF ASIA?
If you have received an invitation, you can choose between two kinds of tickets:
