Asian Diaspora Project
Asian Diaspora Project
Asian Diaspora Project tells the inspiring stories of people making a big impact in their communities around the globe. We shine a spotlight on amazing members of the Asian diaspora who are changing the world after their families moved across the world. Our goal is to fill a crucial gap in the media landscape with positive, inspirational, real world stories, and in the process counter incorrect and harmful narratives of Asian diaspora communities across the west.
Asian Diaspora Project was founded in response to 3 things:
- The massive growth of the Asian Diaspora. When Asia Society was founded in 1956 the Asian American population was less than half a million. Today it’s nearly 25 million and the fastest growing group.
- Negative portrayals, under-representation, and lack of visibility of Asians across western media. More than half of Americans can’t name a famous Asian American.
- The rise in anti-Asian violence targeting diaspora groups around the world. Hate crimes and attacks targeting Asians rose across the west after the COVID-19 outbreak, echoing past waves of anti-Asian violence like post-9/11.
