A conversation around the critically acclaimed book GRASPING GREATNESS, MAKING INDIA A LEADING POWER with two of the editors, Bibek Debroy (joining via Zoom) and C. Raja Mohan. The evening will be moderated by Ajay Kapur. Grasping Greatness is an important contribution to intellectual debate as India enters into a new era on the world stage. The book explores India’s push for eminence in world affairs and the economic, state-building, and international dimensions of this ambition. 

Featured in the book are eminent thinkers like Rakesh Mohan, Ila Patnaik, Surjit Bhalla, Arjun Subramanian, and others who reflect upon the tasks at hand and the desirable routes to achieve them.

C. Raja Mohan is a senior fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute in Delhi and a visiting research professor at the National University of Singapore. Earlier, he was Director of the Institute of South Asian Studies in Singapore and founded the Carnegie India Center in New Delhi. He is a columnist on international affairs for Foreign Policy and the Indian Express. His research work focuses on India’s foreign policy, Eurasian geopolitics. Indo-Pacific security, and global governance of advanced technologies. His recent books include Asia’s New Geopolitics: Military Power and Regional Order.  

Bibek Debroy (joining via Zoom) is an economist and Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and President, Indian Statistical Institute. He has worked in Presidency College, the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune, the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, as the Director of a Ministry of Finance/UNDP project on legal reforms, the Department of Economic Affairs, the National Council of Applied Economic Research, the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies, the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Centre for Policy Research and as Member of NITI Aayog. He has authored/edited several books, papers and popular articles and has also been a Consulting/ Contributing Editor with several newspapers. 

Ajay Kapur (moderator) spent 30 years as a Global Markets Strategist at various investment banks in Hong Kong and New York. Kapur graduated with an economics degree from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, has a management degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and a Masters in Public Affairs from Princeton University, where he received the Woodrow Wilson fellowship. 

He has written extensively on global economies and the correlation with markets. In particular his work on emerging economies with significant income and wealth inequalities, under the umbrella term Plutonomy, has been innovative and path breaking. It was featured in the movie " Capitalism - a love story " by Michael Moore.  He is currently based in Hong Kong. 

About India by The Bay:

India by the Bay is a week-long celebration of Indian art and culture co-presented by Teamwork Arts and the Asia Society Hong Kong Center, with the support of the Consulate General of India in Hong Kong. The festival features literature, music, food, dance and theatre, encompassing both the contemporary and classic.

The Festival is dedicated to promoting mutual understanding and strengthening partnerships between India and Hong Kong. It is a unique opportunity for the people of Hong Kong to experience and engage with India’s rich cultural heritage.
