Over the last decade the world has entered a period of historic change in the global order. A tectonic shift of relative power from the Western hemisphere to the Eastern hemisphere is underway. The Asian region’s rapidly increasing shares of global trade, capital flows, and economic growth have profoundly altered the international economic system. The emergence of Asian nations as major powers has challenged policy makers in major capitals and institutions worldwide. More recently, heightened tensions and confrontation over sovereignty and resources in maritime Asia have endangered the region’s economic interdependence and threatened international peace and security in the region for the first time in four decades.
Every year, Asia Society is honored to host world leaders during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
