Asia Society Hong Kong Center (ASHK) is proud to host the ninth and newest President and CEO of Asia Society, Dr. Kyung-wha Kang, for a series of programs to welcome her and honor the start of her leadership. Monday, April 29, features a general networking reception followed by an exclusive dinner only for ASHK’s President’s Circle and Corporate members. On Tuesday, April 30, join ASHK for a public lunch.
Dr. Kang has had a long and distinguished career as a diplomat representing South Korea and in leadership roles at the United Nations. As she begins her new role as President of Asia Society, what has Dr. Kang learned from decades of experience in diplomacy and multilateral institutions? How will these lessons translate into her vision for the Asia Society, and how does she view the importance of such institutions in today’s changing world? Join ASHK to hear from Dr. Kang and to share your questions, ideas, and hopes for her tenure at Asia Society.
Dr. Kyung-wha Kang is Asia Society President and Chief Executive Officer (effective April 1, 2024). Dr. Kang is an accomplished diplomat who served as South Korea’s 38th Minister of Foreign Affairs (2017 to 2021)—the first woman to serve in this role in the nation’s history. Before joining the UN, Dr. Kang held various positions in the Korean Foreign Ministry. She served as Minister at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the UN, during which she chaired the 48th and 49th sessions of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. She also spearheaded efforts to highlight women with disabilities in drafting the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Dr. Kang holds MA and PhD degrees from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and her doctorate work was in the field of international and intercultural communication.
