Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, known for founding analytical psychology, was deeply connected with Indian culture and philosophy. His investigations into the depths of the human psyche were enriched by the insights he gained from ancient Indian texts, and his engagement with India is a crucial chapter in the history of analytical psychology. To understand dream imagery, transcultural symbols, and the collective unconscious, Jung had a unique approach to studying Eastern myths, religion and symbols. While Jung’s work has been subject to criticism, he stands out as perhaps the sole Western psychologist of his time to integrate Eastern philosophies with Western science.

Join us for a Talk at the Library with Jungian scholar Sulagna Sengupta as we explore the complex intersections of India, Switzerland, psychology, and history. Rebecca Farner, Outreach and Communications Manager at Asia Society Switzerland, will moderate the conversation.

Sulagna Sengupta is a Jungian scholar and cultural historian. She is the author of two books, Jung in India (2013, 2024) and Animus, Psyche and Culture; A Jungian Revision (2023). Her first book surfaced Jung’s actual history with India in an original, in-depth archival researched project. Sulagna has wide experience of working in repositories and archives, and publishes and lectures regularly on Jungian psychology. She is currently working on a contemporary interpretation of the Indian epic The Ramayana at the University of Essex, U.K. and is involved in multiple publication projects.
