What Will Teachers Look Like in 2030? Asia Society VP of Education Moderates Panel at International Forum
New York, March 18, 2016 — Asia Society Vice President of Education Tony Jackson and International Studies Schools Network Executive Director Doug Sessions recently attended the fourth annual Global Education & Skills Forum in Dubai. The Global Education & Skills Forum, convened by the Varkey Foundation, is the world’s leading education event and seeks to address how the public, private, and social sectors can come together to deliver on the promise of education, equity, and employment for all.
At the forum, Jackson moderated the panel, “What will the teachers of 2030 look like?,” which explored the impact of technology on the classroom. Participating on the panel were David Edwards, Deputy General Secretary for Education International; William Samoei Ruto, Deputy President of Kenya; Beatriz Cardoso, Executive Director of Laboratório de Educação in Brazil; and Anies Baswedan, Minister of Education & Culture of Indonesia, who is also an Asia Society Asia 21 Young Leader.
Participants brought diverse viewpoints to the panel, but all agreed that technology can and should be used to both enhance teacher quality and support and to provide students with the skills and training they will need to succeed in the 21st century. As one local news outlet summarized the discussion, teachers of the future must be “noble, advocates of peace, and tech-savvy.”
Following the Global Education & Skills Forum, Tony Jackson proceeded to Perth, Australia, where he spoke about the critical need for global competence at the Second Asia Pacific International Forum on Intercultural and Global Citizenship Education.
