Midnight and The Moderns: Mapping Progressive Pasts and Proposing Secular Futures (Complete)

NEW YORK, September 17. 2018 — In 1947, India achieved independence from the British Empire. Minutes later, a group of six young firebrands came together to form the Progressive Artists' Group. Their goals? Create modern art and a new visual language for the nascent republic. As part of the opening festivities for The Progressive Revolution: Modern Art for a New India, exhibition guest curator Zehra Jumabhoy traces the founding ideology of India's "quintessential moderns" — and details their long association with the Rockefeller family and Asia Society.
