Maḏayin Exhibition Opening: W. Waṉambi Distinguished Lecture by Dr. Megan Davis
NEW YORK, September 17, 2024 — Asia Society presents the W. Waṉambi Distinguished Lecture in celebration of the opening of Maḏayin: Eight Decades of Aboriginal Australian Bark Painting from Yirrkala at the Asia Society Museum. The lecture is given by Scientia Professor Dr. Megan Davis, former chair of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and renowned public law expert and constitutional lawyer focused on the rights of First Nations Peoples. The program opens with a welcome address by Yasufumi Nakamori, director of Asia Society Museum and vice president of Arts and Culture at Asia Society. This is followed by the entrance of the whole delegation of manikay, remarks about Mr. W. Wanambi by his daughter Dhukumul Wanambi, and the introduction of Dr. Davis by art historian and curator Henry Skerritt. (1 hr., 14 min.)
The Maḏayin exhibition is organized by the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia in partnership with the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre in Australia.
