The EU’s Balancing Act: Navigating Trade Tensions with China and the U.S. in the Era of Trump 2.0
January 23, 2025 — The Asia Society Policy Institute’s (ASPI) Center for China Analysis (CCA) hosts a panel discussion on how the European Union navigates its relationship with its two largest trading partners, the United States and China. With President Donald Trump planning an aggressive tariff agenda targeting both the European Union and China during his second term, Brussels must rethink its strategy to protect its industries, assert its sovereignty, and maintain economic stability. At the same time, tensions with Beijing over tariffs, technology transfer demands, and industrial competition are escalating, raising questions about the sustainability of the European Union’s approach to balancing trade independence with global cooperation. Speakers include Wendy Cutler, ASPI vice president; Ilaria Mazzocco, deputy director and senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies; and Joerg Wuttke, partner at the DGA Albright Stonebridge Group. Lizzi C. Lee, CCA fellow on Chinese Economy, moderates the discussion. (37 min., 18 sec.)
