Cultural Encounters: What is Colonial, What is Local?
June 5, 2024 — In this first session of Asia Society India's Cultural Encounters: South Asian History in the 'Third Space' series, experts come together to bring out the key colonial interactions, imaginings, inequalities, and mediations. Speakers include Gauri Viswanathan, class of 1933 professor in the Humanities and former Director of the South Asia Institute at Columbia University; Dina M. Siddiqi, clinical professor at NYU; and Zehra Jumabhoy, lecturer in the History of Art at the University of Bristol. Ipshita Nath, author of Memsahibs: British Women in Colonial India (2022), moderates the conversation. (53 min., 50 sec.)
Cultural Encounters: South Asian History in the 'Third Space' is this year's edition of Asia Society India's annual summer learning series, which explores how cultural similarities, hybridity, and interaction have shaped South Asia.
