Cultural Encounters: Freedom and Citizenship Histories
August 30, 2024 — In the fourth and final session of Asia Society India's Cultural Encounters: South Asian History in the 'Third Space' series, participants discuss the different and most relevant 'nationalisms' to analyze each country's history, the different ethnic groups that create history, and South Asian thinkers in the context of global knowledge flows. Speakers include Eleanor Newbigin, historian of imperialism and decolonization in 20th century South Asia, and lecturer at SOAS University of London; Sharif Hozoori, fellow at the Institute of International Education Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF), MESA Global Academy scholar, and visiting scholar at the Einaudi Center’s South Asia Program; and Navine Murshid, associate professor of Political Science at Colgate University, and author of several books on Bangladesh, identity, and politics. Tushar Shetty, producer and host of Beyond the Indus of The Diplomat Magazine's South Asia podcast, moderates the discussion. (47 min.)
Cultural Encounters: South Asian History in the 'Third Space’ is this year's edition of Asia Society India's annual summer learning series, which explores how cultural similarities, hybridity, and interaction have shaped South Asia.
