MSNBC's Ali Velshi Speaks on Family's 125-Year Journey and Lessons on Civil Service, Migration, Courage
HOUSTON, August 20, 2024 — Asia Society Texas hosted MSNBC journalist and anchor Ali Velshi for a presentation of his latest book, Small Acts of Courage: A Legacy of Endurance and the Fight for Democracy as part of the signature Muslim Series which is geared at exploring the artistic talents and stories of Muslim Americans. The conversation was moderated by Martyn Goossen, Chairman of the Asia Society Texas Board of Directors.
In a powerful message to the audience of almost 200 guests, Velshi underscored the significance of advocating for social justice through practical actions, rather than ideology. The conversation also delved into the century-long experiences of Velshi’s family as they moved from India to Kenya, South Africa, Canada, and the United States, highlighting the challenges faced by Indian immigrants.
Help Us Build a More Inclusive World
Velshi took the audience on a poignant journey through his family's history: from his great-grandfather's daring swim through shark-infested waters off the coast of Africa to his grandfather's time in Mahatma Gandhi's ashram; his father's triumph over numerous challenges to become a public servant in Canada; and Velshi’s own journey to the U.S. to pursue his career in journalism. In his own words, Velshi is part of a 125-year chain of struggle for democracy and political obligations.
Many historical figures, including Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, were influential in Velshi's family's journey to becoming involved in public life. Velshi also reflected on how courage paved the family's way to fight apartheid, colonialism, and discrimination. He shared his hope that politics will change its vitriolic nature and become more inclusive and accessible to people, encouraging the audience to vote and promote change from where they are, and to stop thinking someone else will do it.
Velshi also illuminated the pivotal role of journalism in fostering dialogue among different parties and its profound impact on democracy. The conversation concluded with an insightful exchange of perspectives on current affairs including international security, a Q&A with a highly engaged audience, and a book-signing session.
