HOUSTON, October 21, 2019 — Asia Society Texas Center (ASTC)'s annual Night Market is back! Presented by American First National Bank, this FREE event offers a curated selection of food + home goods + art from local artisans, after-hours access to a new exhibition, a Japanese-style carnival, a K-pop demo, and a ticketed beer garden. Drawing inspiration from street markets found in East and Southeast Asia, our Night Market is the perfect event for a family outing, a date night, or a gathering with friends!
Artist Talk: Xiaoze Xie on “Amber of History: Reinventing the Library Cave in Dunhuang”
After visiting the “Library Fave” in China’s Dunhuang cave complexes, Xiaoze Xie questioned how, as a Chinese American artist, to reconnect with the vast traditions of ancient Chinese art. Xie discusses the significance of Dunhuang to his creative practice and in his current projects.

The Majestic Lion of the Kabuki Theater Workshop
Kabuki master Nakamura Gankyō takes workshop participants on a journey through this unique Japanese theatrical style, demonstrating highlights from the dance drama Mirror Lion (Shunkyō Kagami jishi) followed by an interactive workshop. Participants will be immersed in the world of Kabuki Theater, learning how to physically transform themselves into one of its actors through vocal and physical exercises.

Adult Art Class: Woodblock Printing
Inspired by our Tsuruya Kōkei exhibition? Learn the art of creating block prints in this three-week adult workshop where students will cut their own blocks and create prints using linoleum as well as the traditional Japanese method.

Ongoing Exhibitions
Tsuruya Kōkei: Kabuki Prints Revised & Revisited
The exhibition presents all of Tsuruya Kōkei’s kabuki actor prints from 1983 to 1993. Because the artist limited his editions, such a complete collection is unprecedented and represents a first in Texas. To explore the broader contours of kabuki actor prints, Kōkei’s work is contextualized by actor prints by Sharaku, as well as two dozen additional works by contemporary Japanese and western artists.

Form is Emptiness, Empitness is Form: Works by Miya Ando [NEW]
Drawing on the important Buddhist text known as the Heart Sutra, artist Miya Ando makes her Asia Society debut responding to the Center’s unique building with references to elemental materials such as metal, light, water, and wood. This site-specific response to Yoshio Taniguchi’s architecture reframes the visitor's perception of the space, and invites contemplation of the nature of reality.
