Intern Spotlight: Saege Anzueto

Get Involved!
Asia Society Texas works with high school and university interns each semester through our Regions Bank Young Leaders Internship program. Under this program, we have partnered with various high schools and universities in the Greater Houston area to provide opportunities for students to engage with the broad swath of programs offered by Asia Society and learn more about nonprofit operations. Interns have worked in program development, research and curriculum-writing, outreach efforts, accounting and finance, and more. Through their time with Asia Society Texas, interns learn more about Asian art, history, and culture while gaining direct experience in a professional environment.
We'd like to shine a spotlight on one of our interns, Saege Anzueto, who gained teaching and lesson planning skills she hopes to bring to her Fulbright applications!

Favorite project you’ve worked on during your internship: Super Saturday: Diwali Fun
Most interesting thing you’ve learned during your internship: I was extremely interested in the prevalence of Korean adoptees worldwide, especially in the community in Houston. We held an event before our Super Saturday: Korean Culture Celebration program in partnership with the National Center for the Rights of the Child, an organization that promotes children's welfare and health and builds a community for Korean adoptees. Just before the dances, a few adoptees presented their stories and short excerpts from memoirs detailing their experiences in childhood. I found their testimonies extremely moving, providing me with a new perspective on U.S.-Korean relations that dives deeper than the surface of politics and history I had grown familiar with. This event left me with a lasting reminder of the sacrifices of families and their children alike.
Reflection
My time at Asia Society Texas has been so memorable that I plan on continuing my involvement as a volunteer after my term concludes. The cultural education we bring to Houston is so important, and I am proud to have been a part of this learning experience this fall. After working with the Education and Outreach Department, I have gained teaching and lesson-planning skills that I hope to bring with me in my immediate plans as a Fulbright applicant and into my career in Asian American relations. Events like our Super Saturday: Diwali Fun celebration were super interesting, so I have been grateful to always have something new to see and learn. I really enjoyed interacting with the families who joined us for the celebration, doing crafts with the children, and sharing a story about Diwali in a modern household!
