Intern Spotlight: Landry Knight
Asia Society Texas works with high school and university interns each semester through our Regions Bank Young Leaders Internship program. Under this program, we have partnered with various high schools and universities in the Greater Houston area to provide opportunities for students to engage with the broad swath of programs offered by Asia Society and learn more about nonprofit operations. Interns have worked in program development, research and curriculum-writing, outreach efforts, accounting and finance, and more. Through their time with Asia Society Texas, interns learn more about Asian art, history, and culture while gaining direct experience in a professional environment.
We'd like to shine a spotlight on one of our high school interns Landry Knight, from Houston Academy for International Studies, who works with our Education and Outreach department.

Favorite project you’ve worked on during your internship: Creating Night Market Activities (researching, making activity sheets, and seeing how much people liked them)
Most interesting thing you’ve learned during your internship: I have learned just how many things people can have going on at once. You never know who is working on an online portal is one minute and joining a call to talk about a future project the next. Seeing how people were having to manage their time and better learn how to use mine was very interesting.
Reflection
I have always been interested in learning about other countries and cultures, and since high school my desire to expand my knowledge has only increased. I heard about the opportunity to intern at Asia Society Texas from friends of mine at school. I knew about the organization from seeing a few of their exhibitions and having a school visit. These visits and reading more about them on their website only confirmed my interest in wanting to work with them.
When going into the internship at Asia Society, I was not sure what to expect but was excited to learn more and intern under such an amazing organization. While I mainly worked in Education and Outreach, I got to take part of, research, and meet different people during my time there. I worked with fellow interns — Melannie, Melisa, and Michelle — on creating activities and researching different cultures and countries. I got to be a part of and work on a variety of things like Night Market, Winter Wonderland, Lunar New Year, Divine Spark, Spring Break camps, Eid, and many more. This has allowed me to get in touch with my inner artist and learn how to navigate a professional setting.
My desired career is HR and international business, which isn’t exactly what I am doing with my internship, but it was still aligned with my interests and desire to learn how different companies operate. The skills I learned at Asia Society will help me learn some of the basic skills needed to enter the modern day work force. From networking to resume skills, ASTX has taught me a variety of skills to help me succeed in the next stages of life.
