Wayang Kulit— The Shadow Play of Kelantan
VIEW EVENT DETAILSIn collaboration with Society for the Performing Arts
UPDATE: Tonight's show with Wayang Kulit is SOLD OUT. Please join us for a FREE shadow puppetry workshop on Saturday, February 28.
In this ancient form of puppet theatre, the shadows of intricately carved leather puppets are projected onto a screen. The shadow plays are based on the Ramayana, an age-old Hindu epic that has become a treasured folk tale across Malaysia. Wayang Kulit Siam—the adaptation of this spectacle practiced in the Muslim villages of the Kelantan region—is considered a cultural treasure in Malaysia. This program is presented in collaboration with Society for the Performing Arts (SPA).
This performance is the brainchild of Arts Midwest’s Caravanserai program, presented in Houston through SPA. The initiative will offer three exciting programs throughout the 2014-15 season, from performance to film to shadow puppetry.
Light bites and beverages will be available for purchase before the performance from 6:00 - 7:00 pm.
Join us for a FREE workshop on February 28.
