Voices of the Spirit VI
VIEW EVENT DETAILSIn collaboration with Houston Arts Alliance's Folklife + Civic Engagement Program
Houston is a remarkably diverse city—and in no domain of city life is that more apparent than in its faith communities. Many immigrants to the city have created a sense of home for themselves through churches, mosques, temples, and cultural organizations. Unsurprisingly, most of these communities have fostered rich sacred music traditions.
Each year, Houston Arts Alliance’s Folklife + Civic Engagement program celebrates these sacred music traditions with a concert entitled Voices of the Spirit. Join us at Asia Society to explore devotional music from Houston’s diverse faith communities.
This year's concert will begin with an Islamic call to prayer by Mu'ezzin Ameer Abuhalimeh of the Islamic Da’Wah Center, followed by a repertoire of alabanzas in adoration of the Virgin of Guadalupe by Mariachi Estrellas de Mexico. The program will continue with Neak Porn Ensemble performing traditional Cambodian Buddhist temple music. Concluding the concert will be Walagante, a Garifuna group combining traditional percussion, chorus, and dance.
An additional performance on Sunday, December 4 features the same program.
