About the Artist
Sudha Ragunathan is a preeminent singer in the classical carnatic musical tradition of southern India. She is based in Chennai in India.
Ragunathan was initially trained in music at a very young age by her mother Smt. Choodamani. Ragunathan continued her training under Sri. B.V. Lakshmanan. She received an Indian Government Scholarship for Young Artistes for advanced training in carnatic music and came under the tutelage of the illustrious singer, Dr. M.L VasanthaKumari (MLV). Ragunathan trained under MLV for 13 years and often accompanied her on the stage. MLV encouraged Ragunathan to pursue music as a career. Ragunathan is one of MLV’s prominent successors.
Ragunathan earned a Master’s degree in economics, but music was her calling. Ragunathan has a mellifluous voice which enthralls her listeners from all over the globe, and has carved a niche for herself in carnatic music circles. Her distinct vocal style and effortless singing made her the most sought after artist for several prestigious concerts. As the brightest singing star on the horizon, her voice mesmerized fans across the country and beyond the Indian shores.
She is the recipient of numerous awards including the prestigious Padma Shri in 2004 and Padma Bhushan in 2015 given by the President of India. She is also the recipient of the Sangita Kalanidhi award of the famed Music Academy in Chennai and the Kalaimamani award from the Government of Tamil Nadu.
