Performing Asia: Kathak Dance with Shovana Narayan
VIEW EVENT DETAILSLed by Padma Shri Guru Shovana Narayan, this performance takes the audience on a journey through emotions moved by rhythm and melody. An intimate performing ensemble of dancers and musicians will join Narayan to present a stunning multi-part program that pulls from history, folklore, and powerful deities through the beauty of kathak dance.
Kathak, one of the eight major forms on Indian classical dance, originated in northern India and is derived from the Sanskrit word katha (“to tell stories”).
About Shovana Narayan
Shovana Narayan established herself as a dancer in the 1970s and has since captivated audiences around the world. She is known for her strong urge for experimentation. She has set a unique trend by redefining dance and is often considered as a living legend in the field of art. Narayan is the first professional dancer who combines a full-fledged career as a senior serving civil servant in the Government of India. Narayan has also worked with many western dancers and musicians. Some of her choreographic works like "Moonlight Impressionism" and "The Dawn After" have been successful in bringing out the true color of different dance and musical forms.
About InSyncKathak Dance School
InSyncKathak Dance School (CA) was founded by Anupama Srivastava, disciple of Padma Shri Guru Shovana Narayan. Since its inception in 2013, it has grown to almost 50 students who receive training in the Lucknow Gharana Style of kathak. The School has made its mark through various notable performances in collaboration with cultural and non-profit organizations in the Bay Area, and has gained recognition through awards from prestigious dance competitions such as OSAAT, FIA, and BATA.
