VIEW EVENT DETAILSPresented in partnership with the Taiguruma Revival Project

Schedule
Thursday, November 10, 2024
10 a.m. – 12 p.m. First Workshop
1–3 p.m. Second Workshop
The same content is provided in both workshops and space is limited.
Discover the art of making beautiful mini lanterns using bamboo and shoji paper with the Taiguruma Revival Project! Inspired by Taiguruma — traditional Japanese "fish cart" lantern toys — these lanterns were popular in the Maki district of Niigata, Japan, where children would pull them along when they visited their ancestors' graves during Obon season.
In this hands-on workshop, learn about traditional Japanese techniques that have been passed down through generations, blending the past with the present. Exclusive for Asia Society Texas members, the workshop is available at two different times, all lantern materials will be provided, and guests will enjoy delicious snacks and teas from Niigata, Japan!
About the Taiguruma Revival Project
After noticing the decline of traditional Taiguruma craftsmen, Motoyuki Noguchi founded the Taiguruma Revival Project. Instead of relying on one craftsman, the project attempts to pass down the tradition of Taiguruma-making through educators and various workshops.
Education and Outreach programs at Asia Society Texas are presented by AARP. Major support comes from Nancy C. Allen, Chinhui Juhn and Eddie Allen, The Brown Foundation, Inc., The Freeman Foundation, Houston Endowment Inc., and The Truist Foundation. Generous funding also provided by Asia Chemical Corporation, the Susan Vaughan Foundation, and Johanna Brassert and Bill Stewart. Free Thursday exhibition admission presented by The Nyquist Family. Additional support is provided by Cathay Bank Foundation, the George and Mary Josephine Hamman Foundation, and the Friends of Asia Society, a dedicated group of individuals and organizations committed to bringing exceptional programming and exhibitions to Asia Society Texas.
