A major figure in classical Indian bharata natyam, Malavika Sarukkai makes her Asia Society Texas Center debut with Darshan: Seeking the Divine. Described by critics and audiences alike as a "luminous" dancer and choreographer, Sarukkai shares the stage with four extraordinary musicians in an evening imbued with the flow of bhakti (devotion). Darshan: Seeking the Divine comprises choreographies that have been revisited over several years. With each recreation, the layers of meaning deepen to allow the sacred to rise without effort or artifice.
Of her tour de force Sarukkai says, “Space is sculpted, energized and the divine embodiment of Krishna is invoked through poetry drawn from the great literatures of India. In both nritta (pure dance) and abhinaya (expressive dance) the sacred is evoked through a seeking of harmony and inner alignment.” Darshan: Seeking the Divine speaks to the continued relevance of an ancient art form and the remarkable potential of solo dance to transform “performance” into “experience.”
