Lunar New Year 2022: Celebrating the Year of the Tiger

UPDATE (February 4, 2022) — Our pre-event general admission registration is now closed. We welcome walk-up guests to the event as capacity allows!


Health and Safety

To ensure our community's health and safety, face masks covering the nose and mouth are required inside the building for all attendees ages 2 and up. Due to inclement weather, all food and drink vendors will be inside our Education Center (second floor). Food and drink must be consumed in the Education Center or in the adjacent Green Garden (outdoors).

2022 is the Year of the Tiger — a confident, enthusiastic, and courageous animal that represents strength and helping others for the greater good. Join Asia Society Texas in welcoming the Year of the Tiger with performances, art and craft activities, and food inspired by Lunar New Year traditions across Asia.

Dance to the beat of traditional lion dancers as they perform outside on our festival lawn. Enjoy free exhibition admission, and learn about Lunar New Year traditions around the world through all-ages crafts, activities, and performances. A limited quantity of red envelopes will also be given to children.

This event is FREE and open to the public; registration is required. Food and drink will be available for sale. Performances by Huaxing Arts Group Houston are ticketed.

Activities

All activities take place from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. except where noted otherwise.

Chinese Calligraphy
Explore traditional writing styles and receive your name or a simple phrase in Chinese characters.

Tiger Hat Making
In celebration of the Year of the Tiger, create a fun tiger hat to take home.

Photo Booth
Take a festive photo with costumed Peking Opera Performers.

Chinese Dance
Enjoy an interactive dance demonstration, then learn classical performances requiring skill, balance, and concentration.

Ddakji
Play a traditional South Korean game! Ddakji is constructed by folding two square pieces of paper together into a square. The game is won by flipping the other player's card.

Zodiac Game
Learn about the zodiac, identify your animal, and take a fun postcard home.

Lunar New Year Around the World
In this fun map activity, learn the locations of different Lunar New Year celebrations.

Papercutting
Learn about traditional papercutting and cut your own Lunar New Year designs.

Storytime | 11:30 a.m., 12:30p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m.
Learn the story of the Jade Emperor in a fun, interactive storytime!

Lion Dance | 12:00 p.m.
Enjoy an energetic lion dance performance on our festival lawn.

Spring Festival: Splendor of Huaxing
TICKETS: $5 Members, $10 Nonmembers
Performance times at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Each showtime will feature the same performances.

UPDATE (February 1, 2022) — The 1 p.m. performance is sold out. Tickets will not be sold onsite.

To celebrate the 2022 Lunar New Year, Huaxing Arts Group will join Asia Society Texas Center to present a collection of Chinese music and dance. From modern interpretations of traditional tunes to classic folk dances, the performance will highlight a variety of performers and dance styles.

Huaxing Arts Group Houston is a civic organization of Chinese Americans in the Greater Houston Area. The association has served the greater community through volunteerism, service, and cultural exchange with a patriotic focus on strengthening the Chinese American community and its relationship to fellow citizens.
