Family Day: Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year is a holiday which many Americans associate with China, however it is celebrated across Asia and the Houston community. Our event will explore customs from the diverse cultures of China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Join us as we begin the Year of the Monkey with art projects, demonstrations, performances, and special food options.

Korean fusion food by Coreanos | 1 – 4 pm
Taste flavors of the Korean peninsula fused with selections from Mexican and Texan cuisines. Recommended for all ages.
Korean kite creation and Tuho station by Korean American Society of Houston | 1 – 4 pm
Create a flying craft to celebrate the Korean New Year and play a traditional game of tuho, a contest of skill and accuracy. Recommended for all ages.
Mobile monkey creations | 1 – 4 pm
In celebration of the year of the monkey, create a small primate which will be able to swing and move its limbs. Recommended for ages 5 and older.
Mochi cart | 1 – 4 pm
Delight in this sweet Japanese treat to celebrate Lunar New Year. Recommended for all ages.
Nengajo creative writing activity | 1 – 4 pm
Design a Japanese new year card and write a poetic message to friends or family. Recommended for ages 7 and older.
Smilebooth Photo Station | 1 – 4 pm
Make your own festive photo to remember the year of the monkey. Recommended for all ages.
Tet Incense Containers | 1 – 4 pm
Create a holder for incense sticks, which are commonly burned during Vietnamese Tet celebrations at ancestral altars. Recommended for ages 7 and older.
Korean farmers' dance by Korean American Society of Houston | 1:30 pm
Enjoy a traditional performance by the Houston Korean community in celebration of the new year. Recommended for all ages.
FREE Tour of Drawn from Nature and Yeesookyung: Contemporary Korean Sculpture | 3:00 pm
Receive a free tour of our current exhibitions. Those unable to attend can still enjoy complimentary admission all day from 10 am - 6 pm. Recommended for all ages.
Chinese dance performance by Dance of Asian America | 2 pm
Enjoy a festive performance celebrating China’s contributions to Lunar New Year traditions. Recommended for all ages.
Martial arts demonstration by Henderson Smith | 2:30 pm
Witness the graceful movements and energy of t’ai chi and qigong, Chinese martial arts used for both self-defense and meditative practices. Recommended for all ages.
