Dating back to the Han Dynasty (202 B.C. – 220 A.D.), zhangtou puppetry requires the master manipulation to tell classic stories well-known in China, such as A Minor Magistrate Settles a Lawsuit, The Butterfly Lovers, Mr. Dongguo and the Wolf, and Wu Song Fights the Tiger.

About the Puppet Troupe of the Henan Opera and Dance Theater
Founded in 1958, the Puppet Troupe of the Henan Opera and Dance Theater aims to promote traditional Chinese culture among children. As the main puppet show company of Henan Province, the troupe has since its establishment produced and performed a variety of popular puppet plays including Heroic Two Sisters of the Grassland, 1.5kg of Rice, The Duck Commander, The Legend of White Snake, The Blazing Mountain, Peter & Wolves, The Legend of Qiyun Pagoda, A Ventriloquist Hunter, A Minor Magistrate Settles a Lawsuit, Snow White, The Butterfly Lovers, Little Soccer Fans (TV series), Peony Fairy, A Story in the Forrest, and The Adventure of A Little Puppet. Many of the plays have won provincial and national awards. Being one of the most active in China, the troupe has performed across the country and frequently toured overseas for the last six decades.
The China Series at Asia Society Texas Center is presented by East West Bank. Performing Arts programs at Asia Society Texas Center are presented by Mickey Rosenau and Ellen Gritz. Major support comes from Nancy C. Allen and Mary Lawrence Porter, as well as The Brown Foundation, Inc., Houston Endowment, and the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.
