About the Exhibitions
Round Trip: Bicycling Asia Minor, 1891
In the summer of 1890, two young Americans, William Sachtleben and Thomas Allen, Jr., set off to circle the globe on new-fangled safety bicycles. Round Trip features a selection of photographs taken by the cyclists during a year on the road visiting Greece, Turkey, Persia (today Iran), and a portion of the Russian Empire (Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan). The images vividly convey what the two adventurers experienced as they pedaled across barren dirt roads, river crossings, mountain passes, and volcanic terrains, encountering new peoples and cultures.
Drawn From Nature
Artists have been deeply influenced by nature for centuries, and perhaps nowhere more so than in Asia. Drawn from Nature brings together a group of contemporary artists for whom nature plays a pivotal role in the inspiration for, and execution of, their artworks. Sopheap Pich, Mineko Grimmer, Palden Weinreb, and Seon Ghi Bahk are featured in Asia Society Texas Center’s first-ever exhibition dedicated to nature, allowing visitors to see its continuing impact as a source of artistic inspiration in the contemporary context.
