Community Spotlight: Loc Huynh

Asia Society Texas believes in the strength and beauty of diverse perspectives and people — and our work to advance cultural exchange is possible in large part thanks to the community partners with whom we've collaborated over the years. Each of these numerous organizations and individuals brings a unique background and area of expertise that, combined with their passion and generosity, help strengthen and enrich our programs, from innovative arts to energetic festivals and camps to lively panel discussions.
Through our Community Spotlights, we're excited to shine a light on some of our partners with whom we've been fortunate to collaborate over the years.
About Loc Huynh
Loc Huynh is an emerging contemporary painter in Houston who uses his visual language to share stories about the hybridized and complex experiences as a Vietnamese American in Houston. He earned an MFA from the University of North Texas, and is quickly becoming one of Houston's most sought-after painters. As the Nancy C. Allen Curator and Director of Exhibitions at Asia Society Texas, Owen Duffy organizes 4–6 art exhibitions annually that promote the work of Asian and Asian American artists. He shares, "One of the many joys of my job is collaborating with Houston-based artists. Loc is innovatively using the language of painting, and popular visual culture, to advance new narratives about Asian American experience, and how that experience is uniquely Texan."

How our partnership began
Loc began his partnership with AST during Artists on Site in 2024. The annual residency program invites four Houston artists to work at AST for six weeks, transforming the galleries into public art studios. Loc was an ideal resident artist, using the time in the studio to produce new bodies of work, and always engaging visitors with friendly conversation.
What we enjoy about partnering with Loc

Owen writes: "Loc's work expands what it means to be a Houstonian. Moreover, he is easy-going and approachable, which helps the public find meaningful connections with his art!"
What Loc enjoys about partnering with us
Loc says, “Artists on Site was such a wonderful and unique experience for both the artists and the guests. It's not every day that you visit a museum and get to meet the artists making the artwork in the museum. I think there is something really special about that.”
What we're looking forward to next!
AST is continuing to work with Loc in the future, including collaborating on an exhibition that focuses on how contemporary artists reference anime in their work, which is slated to open Fall 2025 — stay tuned!
About APAH Month at Asia Society Texas
Beginning in 2021, Asia Society Texas has celebrated Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with the Houston community and beyond through a curated calendar of events for 31 ways to celebrate over the 31 days of May. Spotlighting the traditions, talents, and contributions of Asians and Asian Americans, the calendar highlights the month's key Asia Society programming, providing a platform to showcase local artists, performers, educators, and leaders who contribute to the vibrant, multicultural tapestry of Houston while also featuring staff recommendations for our favorite music, books, movies, and more by Asian and Asian American creatives.
At Asia Society Texas, APAH Month is an opportunity to celebrate and honor Asians and Asian Americans and to uplift their stories to a broader audience as part of our goal to inspire our larger community to better understand one another through culture, conversation, and connection.
