Look and Listen: Asian Art and Music — Yumi Kurosawa, koto, with Sonia Coman-Ernstoff
Watch virtuoso Yumi Kurosawa perform and discuss music for the koto, alongside woodblock prints and ink paintings from the National Museum of Asian Art at the Smithsonian collections showing the instrument in a variety of contexts. Yumi will be joined by Japanese art scholar and curatorial fellow Sonia Coman-Ernstoff for an exploration of traditions pursued through creativity and playfulness, at the intersection of sound, image, and text.
The program is free with registration on June 24, 2020, at 3 p.m.
Mailchimp presents SXSW 2020: Texas High School Shorts Program
When the city of Austin had to cancel this year's SXSW festival, Mailchimp and Oscilloscope Laboratories came together to create a digital home for the shorts slated for show. Though there are dozens of films featured, we recommend the Texas High School Shorts, which highlight the work of high school students in Texas and span a variety of genres, from fiction to animation to documentary.
Videos: The Making of the Blind Goat
If you were ever curious to know what goes on behind the scenes of opening a restaurant, Christine Ha has created a series of videos following her journey to creating her first establishment, The Blind Goat. This mini-series gives an up-close and personal view of what it takes to go into the restaurant business as a visually impaired home cook, from forming a partnership to picking out a name, designing a logo to holding preview pop-ups, and more. While most of the videos are a couple years old now, they've recently included an update showing how the restaurant has had to adapt to COVID-19.
