Young Lives in China
VIEW EVENT DETAILSA Conversation with Alec Ash
China’s role in the world is becoming increasingly more dominant and will influence our future. But who is China’s future?
British author and journalist Alec Ash has moved to Beijing almost a decade ago. His latest book, a literary nonfiction called Wish Lanterns, follows the lives of six of young Chinese millennials born from 1985 to 1990 as they grow up in a rapidly changing country and start their careers. It paints a rich picture of contemporary China, its future challenges, and manages to convey a lot of insights on Chinese politics and its fast-changing society.
For the first time in Switzerland, Alec Ash is reading selected parts of his book as well as discussing how he has experienced a very transitional and diverse generation of young Chinese and what changes he has observed since then. The conversation will be moderated by Nico Luchsinger of Asia Society Switzerland.
Copies of Wish Lanterns will be available for sale in English and German at each event.
Alec Ash is a young British freelance writer and editor based in Beijing, and author of Wish Lanterns, a literary nonfiction about the lives of six young Chinese published in 2016. He is currently managing editor of the China Channel at the Los Angeles Review of Books. He studied English literature at Oxford University, where he edited The Isis magazine and hitchhiked to Morocco. In 2007, he taught in a Tibetan village in western China, before moving to Beijing in 2008.
