Private Art Tour at Johann Jacobs Museum Zurich
VIEW EVENT DETAILS«Holy Goods» Chinese fire offerings and the cult of globalized consumption
The current exhibition at the Johann Jacobs Museum is dedicated to of the oldest forms of Chinese folk belief and its extreme development towards global trends over the past decades.
In recent years, fire offerings for the dead have changed from counterfeit copies of traditional products to replicas of goods found in any Western department store. The result is a kind of paper counter-world in which almost all of today’s globalized brand and market fetishes are given over to the fire.
For this exhibition, curator Wolfgang Scheppe has chosen a panoply of elegant paper shoes that are destined to be burned for a life hereafter. This shoe shop for the dead shows something that seems alien yet familiar, and illustrates the emerging gap between tradition and globalization in China's society.
