Private Art Tour: Contemporary Japanese Graphic Design
VIEW EVENT DETAILS[INVITATION ONLY] Get to Know Japan's Rich Tradition of Graphic Design
This summer, we have the distinct pleasure of inviting members of our VIP Community (Patrons, Passport Members and Corporate Members) to a private Art Tour of the unique exhibition Japanese Graphic Design Today at Zurich's Museum of Design. Curators Damian Fopp and Barbara Junod will lead us through the two parts of the exhibition:
Japanese Graphic Design Today
Japan has a long and rich tradition of graphic design. Its abundance of outstanding works and idiosyncratic designers makes this island nation as thrilling as ever. While Europe is well acquainted with the designers of the postwar period, Japan’s contemporary design scene has been largely invisible. Japanese Graphic Design Today will focus on this generation. By featuring designers born between 1973 and 1993, the exhibition will present an overview of the work being produced today. With numerous originals and creations that have never before been shown outside of Japan, it will provide an insight into the vast array of its contemporary design practices.
Helmut Schmid Typography
The typography of Helmut Schmid (1942–2018) is precise and elegant. This is particularly true of his logos for the Japanese pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, but as well of his designs for the political campaigns for the German SPD. After living in Sweden, Canada, and Germany, Schmid eventually settled in Japan. There, impressed by Japanese poster art and the simple beauty of Japanese artifacts, he refined the typographical approach that he had learned from his teacher Emil Ruder in Basel. The exhibition will show the most important stages in Schmid’s career and shed light on his position as mediator between East and West. On display will be logos, packaging, corporate designs as well as independent works by this designer, who also gained international renown as a publicist.
