Chinese Ceramics in the Museum Rietberg
Like the blue sky after rain’, ‘like the spirit of a cloud rising to the heavens’, ‘like scattered stars and a serene moon’. With words such as these, Chinese poets and connoisseurs praised the ceramics of the Song dynasty (960–1279). To this day these exceptional pieces continue to captivate viewers thanks to their pure perfection, simple elegance, and breathtaking beauty.
The Museum Rietberg is privileged to host a superb selection of more than six hundred pieces from the world-renowned Meiyintang Collection, that showcase the development of Chinese pottery and ceramic art from its beginnings in the Neolithic era up to the thirteenth century.
This tour will take you through 4000 years of ceramic history, focusing on the importance and meaning of this fascinating art for Chinese culture.
